Luc is the son of Danièle Plane and Claude Besson, who both worked as Club Med scuba-diving instructors. He spent much of his childhood traveling with his parents to tourist resorts in Italy, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, and Greece. He moved back to Paris around the time he was eighteen.
Luc is married to film producer Virginie Besson-Silla. Virginie is the sister of actress and filmmaker Karine Silla. Luc has a daughter with his former wife, actress Anne Parillaud; a daughter, actress Shanna Besson, with his former wife, actress Maïwenn Le Besco; and three children with Virginie. Maïwenn is the sister of actress and filmmaker Isild Le Besco.
Luc’s paternal grandfather was Paul Besson (the son of Abraham Jules Besson and Françoise Louise Vaneycken). Paul was born in Paris. Abraham was the son of Paul Besson and Madeleine Mounier.
