After failing to sign one Japanese player, Bundesliga club FC Schalke signed someone else. On Tuesday, the promoted Bundesliga club signed Japan captain Maya Yoshida to strengthen its defence and chances of survival next season. Yoshida, 33, agreed to a one-year contract extension with Schalke, according to a statement.

Even before the club made the transfer official, Romano broke the news, writing, “Schalke 04 are set to sign Japanese centre-back Maya Yoshida on a free transfer. Been told he’s gonna fly to Germany tomorrow to undergo medical test. Schalke going to continue their Japanese era – Yoshida turned down many offers, including Trabzonspor.”

What perplexed Yoshida was Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano’s transfer update on the Japanese defender, which also mentioned another club interested in him. “This guy is incredible… even my wife didn’t know about Trabzonspor,” wrote Yoshida on Twitter.

Yoshida spent last season with Serie A club Sampdoria. He previously played in the English Premier League for Southampton from 2012 to 2020. He also played for the Dutch club VVV-Venlo and the Nagoya Grampus in his home country.
