Downtown YMCA to build brand new facility thanks to generous gift from CapEd
BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — There will soon be a new YMCA building in downtown Boise thanks in large part to a sizeable donation from CapEd Credit Union.
After a multi-year project to determine the future of the existing building on 11th and State St. the board decided to move forward with pursuing a new building. The cost of remodeling and repairing the existing structure would ultimately leave the downtown Y with the same challenges they face now.
CapEd Credit Union announced on Wednesday that they are contributing $5 million towards the construction of what will now be called the CapEd downtown Boise YMCA. In addition to the financial contribution, CapEd will be providing free access to financial literacy classes and resources to anyone who needs them. There will also be a full service CapEd Credit Union branch attached to the new YMCA building, which is slated to be more than 109,000 square feet.
The new YMCA will be built directly across the street from the existing one in what is currently a parking lot across State St.
The new building will include a massive upgrade and expanded space for programs like a maker-space filled with STEM exploration, a T.H.R.I.V.E center specifically designed to support children with diverse abilities and their families, a 134 seat child development center, and doubling the amount of much needed early childcare space.
The space promises to be a lasting and impactful part of the downtown community for generations to come. And yes, there will be a pool.
