How to Stay Warm in Don’t Starve Together
Before Winter, you should collect as many materials as possible, especially grass, twigs, rocks, flints, silks, and beefalo wool.
Also, try to hunt the Koalefant for its trunk and make a base near the Beefalo herd if possible.
When you’re ready, let’s dive into 4 ways to stay warm in Don’t Starve Together!
1. Thermal Stone
When it comes to dealing with the freezing temperature, Thermal Stone is the first ever solution that should come into your mind, as its recipe is relatively cheap with only 10 Rocks, 1 Pickaxe, and 3 Flints.
Once crafted, put the Thermal Stone near any fire source until it turns red-orange. Then, you can put the Thermal Stone in your inventory and bring it anywhere with you.
A red-orange Thermal Stone lasts roughly 2 days and has 8 uses by default. Each time the Thermal Stone changes color from red-orange to white, its durability is reduced by 1.
That said, if you use the Thermal Stone relentlessly without paying attention to its heat, you can still survive the cold, as Winter only last 15 days by default, while the Thermal Stone can last up to 16 days (8×2).
In addition, Thermal Stone receives heat from any light source, making it really convenient to heat it up along your journey. Simply burn some trees, make a campfire, or even stand near the lava lake.
2. Warm Clothes and Beards
Some clothes in Don’t Starve Together provide a certain amount of insulation points. The higher the insulation is, the slower the temperature reduces.
Even though there are a lot of warm clothes in the game, you can only wear up to 3 pieces (Head, Chest, and Face) at the same time.
The table below shows the items with insulation values and the corresponding slot.
Item | Insulation | Slot |
---|---|---|
Rabbit Earmuffs | 60 | Head |
Dapper Vest | 60 | Chest |
Breezy Vest | 60 | Chest |
Cat Cap | 60 | Head |
Rain Coat | 60 | Chest |
Winter Hat | 120 | Head |
Tam o’ Shanter | 120 | Head |
Beefalo Hat | 240 | Head |
Puffy Vest | 240 | Chest |
Hibearnation Vest | 240 | Chest |
Wilson’s Magnificent Beard | 0-135 | Face |
Webber’s Silky Smooth Beard | 0-67.5 | Face |
Woodie’s Beard | 45 | Face |
Among the clothes, Rain Coat, Winter Hat, Tam o’ Shanter, Beefalo Hat, and Puffy Vest are the best for the head and chest slots. You can get the Tam o’ Shanter from Walrus with a 25% chance, while the rest can be crafted if you have a good silk and tentacle spot supply.
Besides, the face slot is only available for certain characters, including Wilson, Woodie, and Weeber, as they have actual in-game beards.
In general, the combination of Beefalo Hat, Puffy Vest, and max-length Wilson’s beard should protect you from the cold in Winter. If not, you could always bring the Thermal Stone to increase the heat and insulation furthermore.
Remember that the insulation from clothes and beards can’t completely prevent the cold; it just slows down the freezing process.
3. Heat Sources
The third method to stay warm in Don’t Starve Together is by standing next to any heat source. It could be a campfire, a fire pit, a dwarf’s star, or even a burning tree.
In fact, this method is the most common way to stay warm in the game, as it requires minimum resources and effort. However, everything has its downside.
The campfire is mobile and fairly cheap to craft, but it only lasts 270 seconds, and the heat will reduce over time unless you keep fueling it. On the other hand, a fire pit lasts up to 540 seconds, and you don’t have to craft it every time the fire goes down. However, you can’t move the fire pit once placed.
That said, the most economical and convenient way to stay warm is to burn the trees (or burnable objects) with your torch. This method creates an instant fire source for a few seconds, and you can repeat the process many times with just a single torch.
However, before burning the items, remember to take a look around to prevent the fire from spreading.
Later on, when you’ve fully explored the Ruins and crafted a few Star Caller’s Staff, the dwarf star will be your main source of light, heat, and sanity aura.
A single staff can make 20 stars, each lasting 3.5 in-game days, providing a flexible and strong heat source to keep you warm.
4. Hot Food
The final method to stay warm is quite surprising, as you can eat certain food to increase the character’s temperature temporarily.
The table below shows the food’s name and effect duration.
Name | Duration |
---|---|
Fire Nettle Fronds | +60 degrees for 1 minute |
Hot Dragon Chili Salad | +40 degrees for 5 minutes |
Kabobs | 15 seconds |
Stuffed Pepper Poppers | 15 seconds |
Figkabab | 15 seconds |
Figgy Frogwich | 15 seconds |
Meaty Stew | 15 seconds |
Spicy Chili | 15 seconds |
Dragonpie | 10 seconds |
Honey Ham | 10 seconds |
Turkey Dinner | 10 seconds |
Stuffed Eggplant | 5 seconds |
Bunny Stew | 5 seconds |
Soothing Tea | 5 seconds |
Besides the Fire Nettle Fronds and Hot Dragon Chili Salad, every other food increases the character’s temperature by 1 every second.
The main purpose of food in Don’t Starve Together is to provide health, sanity, and hunger. So, using them this way is a waste unless you have some leftovers.
