Boise State runner Allie Ostrander to compete in U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene
BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) — Boise State runner Allie Ostrander will compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore. in the 5,000 meters.
"I've heard that it's an experience you can't replicate anywhere else," the freshman said.
Her freshman campaign has been a good one. Ostrander was the Mountain West cross country champion, Mountain West cross country athlete of the year and Mountain West cross country freshman of the year. She also was the NCAA West Region champion and NCAA cross country national runner-up.
But Ostrander missed the outdoor portion of the team's track and field season due to a tibial stress fracture. A common cause of the injury is over-working the bone. Her first race back will be at the trials.
"My indoor season I felt like I was in the best shape of my life and then I kind of saw that all slip away," Ostrander said.
"She just wants to run hard all the time and she needs to learn how to train and just take the day for what it is," head coach Corey Ihmels said.
Ostrander said she just wants to compete at the U.S. Trials. Ihmels isn't counting her out.
"Nothing is going to shock me," he said. "I've been around her too long to know that.
The first round will be held July 7 at 5:20 p.m. The final will take place Sunday, July 10 at 5:28 p.m.
Former Boise State runner Emma Bates will compete in the 10,000 meters on Saturday, July 2 at Noon. Former Bishop Kelly High School runner Nick Symmonds had to withdrawal from the 800 metes due to an ankle injury.
